Advancing Research for a Sustainable Future

At the James H. Oliver, Jr. Institute for Coastal Plain Science (ICPS), we explore the unique ecosystems of Georgia鈥檚 Coastal Plain, a vast and diverse region covering southern and southeastern Georgia. This living laboratory鈥攈ome to marshes, swamps, and coastal habitats鈥攑rovides an unparalleled environment for scientific discovery and sustainable resource management.
Located in the heart of this ecosystem, 精东 is a hub for cutting-edge research led by faculty and students. Our work focuses on understanding the physical and biological resources of the region to develop solutions that promote environmental sustainability, economic growth, and community resilience.
About ICPS
The Institute for Coastal Plain Science (ICPS) supports Georgia Southern鈥檚 pursuit of academic distinction in teaching, research, and community service by fostering engagement that connects theory to real-world practice, extending learning beyond the classroom.
As an outreach unit of the College of Science and Mathematics, the ICPS helps develop students to work with Georgia鈥檚 communities and industries, turning scientific knowledge into economic opportunities that protect our natural resources.
To support these objectives, we partner with public and private groups to promote research and education focused on understanding and sustainably using the physical and biological resources of Georgia’s Coastal Plain. We also curate and enhance extensive natural history collections and promote them for use in research and education.
